Pick Me Up Private View

The doors to this year's Pick Me Up exhibition at Somerset House were officially opened on Wednesday night. The private view was a terrific success, and YCN would like to thank everybody who took the time to stop by our stall over the course of the evening.

YCN will be in residence at Pick Me Up until Sunday 1st April, where we will be selling a wide variety of prints and products created by YCN illustrators, including some exclusive screenprint designs from André Beato and Angus McCrum.

Pick Me Up is open daily from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, with a late night opening on Thursday evenings until 10:00 pm.

We are delighted to announce that from this Wednesday, the YCN shop will be relocating from its spiritual home at 72 Rivington Street to Somerset House for this year's Pick Me Up. A wide variety of prints and products created by YCN illustrators will be available to buy at the event, including some limited edition screenprint designs produced exclusively for the event by André Beato and Angus McCrum.

The private view will be held on Wednesday 21st March, with the event open to the public from Thursday 22nd March to Sunday 1st April.

Following a fantastic February, which saw a collection of Hastings-based artists and designers offer their wares for sale as part of our Tasting Hastings event at the YCN Shop & Library, we have decided to temporarily close our shop at 72 Rivington Street to give it a little bit of TLC.

Tasting Hastings was an amazing success, with many residents of Shoreditch and beyond stopping by to savour a slice of the seaside provided by local artists including Claire Fletcher, Peter Quinnell, Zeroh and co-curator of the event, lighting designer Philip Oakley.

We would like to thank all those wonderful artists and designers who took part in Tasting Hastings, and everybody who has paid a visit to our shop to see the event over the past month.

The YCN Shop & Library will be closed for refurbishment from today. But fear not, we will re-open soon with some brand new shop fittings and products. In the meantime, you will still be able to buy from our fine selection of prints, greetings cards, wrapping paper and much, much more through our online store.

Annie Hall

Woody Allen's seminal 1977 romantic comedy Annie Hall is now available to borrow from the YCN lending library. Allen plays Alvy Singer, a neurotic New York-based comedian who struggles to maintain a relationship with the eponymous Annie Hall, played by Diane Keaton. The film also features Christopher Walken, Paul Simon, Tony Roberts, Shelley Duvall and a scene-stealing cameo from philosopher Marshall McLuhan.

Described by critic Roger Ebert as "just about everyone's favourite Woody Allen movie", Annie Hall is considered by many to be the director's finest ever film. Why not borrow a copy this weekend? Simply stop by 72 Rivington Street to join the YCN lending library for free.

We have recently added Lukas Moodysson's 2000 comedy drama Together (Tillsammans) to the YCN lending library. Set in 1975, the film follows Elisabeth and her family as they leave their suburban home, and move in with her brother Göran as part of a commune outside of Stockholm.

Shutter Island

We have recently added Martin Scorsese's 2010 psychological thriller Shutter Island to the YCN lending library. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams and Max Von Sydow, the film follows two U.S. Marshals as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of a patient from a high-security asylum for the criminally insane.

A truly tense and sophisticated homage to film noir and '50s B-movies, Shutter Island remains Scorsese's most commercially successful movie to date. To borrow a copy of the film, simply stop by 72 Rivington Street to join the YCN lending library for free.

Tasting Hastings - the seaside comes to Shoreditch

Throughout February, a collection of Hastings-based artists and designers will be offering their wares for sale in the YCN Shop & Library at 72 Rivington Street. Curated by YCN with local lighting designer Philip Oakley, “Tasting Hastings” sets out to celebrate the burgeoning community of craftspeople living and working in the seaside town.

Collectively the group will be offering an eclectic range of products for sale; from Bruce Robbins’ upholstered furniture to Judith Rowe’s practical pottery, from Leigh Dyer’s iconic metalwork to Susan Elliot’s nostalgic mosaics. Alongside these, YCN has collaborated with some of the town’s local manufacturers to create a range of exclusive new products, including natural cosmetics and traditional seaside sweets .

YCN curator Lucy Kenyon says; “We visited Hastings last year as a team, and were dazzled by the output of its artists and designers. Hastings is one of the most curious and charming of England’s seaside towns. It’s an honour to host this group, and we hope to please as many people as possible with their products”.

Philip Oakley says; “It’s true today that many traditions and crafts are dying out due to modern technology and cheaper foreign labour. With this event we want to engage new audiences that probably haven’t been to Hastings and seen this vibrant band of talents first hand; inspiring them to enjoy and support their efforts”.

One of Philip's traditionally made, fairground-inspired illuminations can now be seen in the front window of the YCN Shop & Library.

One of Leigh Dyer's impressive sculptures can also be seen hanging outside 72 Rivington Street. Be sure to stop by soon to catch a look at it.

We will be revealing more information about the other participants throughout the coming week. You will be able to browse and buy their products in the YCN Shop & Library at 72 Rivington Street from 6th to 29th February. Open weekdays from 10am to 6pm and weekends from 11am to 4pm.

Spellbound

We have recently added Jefferey Blitz's 2002 documentary Spellbound to the YCN lending library. The film follows eight young hopefuls from all over America as they work their way towards the prestigious annual National Spelling Bee in Washington DC.

A tale of victory, valour and vocabulary, Spellbound is guaranteed to leave you lost for words. Our library is free to join and you can do so by stopping by 72 Rivington Street.

In addition to our ever growing collection of stimulating reading material, the YCN Shop & Library now has a small but perfectly formed assortment of films available for lending. Included is David Mamet's 1992 deconstruction of the American Dream, Glengarry Glen Ross.

Following a group of salesmen in a Chicago real estate office as they fiercely compete against one another to succeed in a sales contest, Glengarry Glen Ross boasts a cast that includes such acting heavyweights as Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey and Ed Harris. The film also features an appearance by Alec Baldwin in one of the most quotable (and profane) scenes in cinema history. The below clip contains very strong language and is therefore NSFW.

The YCN Student Awards Annual 11/12 is here!

As the YCN Student Awards approach their tenth year, we are delighted to publish another edition of our YCN Student Awards Annual. Showcasing all the stellar work commended as part of the most recent programme, as well as this year’s live briefs, we also catch up with commendees from previous years’ Awards to discuss how they’re practices have grown and evolved since participating.

We are thrilled to have collaborated with photographer Nick Ballon throughout this year’s annual. Nick produced some terrific portraits for our profile pieces on previous Awards commendees, including Sophie Browness, Matt Ivey, Vicky Simmons, James Dawe and Rick Dodds and Steve Howell. He also photographed this year’s Student Of The Year Award, created by lighting designer Phillip Oakley, for the front cover.

As ever, the publication marks the launch of the latest annual YCN Student Awards; presenting new live creative challenges - from the likes of Google, Heinz Salad Cream and SEGA - for all those who wish to tackle them. More information on the YCN Student Awards programme can be found here.
